Our Story

It all started for me when I was only a kid. My father was a TAFE Woodmachining and Woodturning teacher for almost 30 years so, you could say, it’s in my blood.

I have always had a passion for timber.

I began my career as a 16 year old with Bessant Custom Furniture as one of the businesses first employees. Over the next 6 years I completed my apprenticeship and became a tradesman. I assisted in setting up the workshop to what it still is today. I left for a period of time pursuing another career while still holding onto my passion for cabinetmaking. I would do work for people including for a builder on sites which kept my skills and interest in the industry.
In September of 2014 I returned to Cabinetmaking as my full time job, it was at this time I purchased Bessant Custom Furniture. I always had the desire to own my own business and it was nice to make that a reality. It was nice to come back to a familiar place and see things hadn’t really changed since I left. It allowed me to focus on what was important in my business and that was quality and training.
Since then we have endeavoured to bring the highest quality custom furniture to our customers. There are only a select few business’ in our area who make true custom furniture. It is Bessant Custom Furniture’s endeavour to achieve the highest quality furniture for not only our local area, for the country.
We have a select team of workers, a small number of qualified people to ensure our promise of high quality continues no matter the job. This means we give each job the attention and detail it deserves, ensuring we don’t compromise our work by cutting corners or producing duplicate pieces to make it easier for us. At times this requires more time than originally thought due to many factors which play a role when building furniture from timber. Weather plays a huge role in the middle and final phases of construction requiring mild temperatures and mild humidity which at times can be difficult. It is a factor that is out of our control and proves to be a challenge at times in our Australian climate. We are constantly managing and reassessing to achieve our aim of providing exceptionally made furniture.
Creating custom furniture is a craft that requires attention to detail, every piece is different and there are many factors that go into creating these pieces. Each piece of timber is different even of the same type so ensuring the necessary time is taken to work with each piece is crucial to the outcome. Every day presents with a different challenge and requires a particular type of person to do a job like this, patience and creativity are high qualities a cabinetmaker must have.
During the latter half of 2016 we started brainstorming ideas about stand-up desk concepts that were ergonomically sound and presented so well it was a piece of furniture anyone would proudly want in their home or office. In partnership with Ergomazing, this is where RadiusNine was born. Our aim was to produce a piece of furniture which had not been done before, to the highest of craftsmanship quality that no one has achieved. We wanted to offer something that really set us apart from the rest.
With the RadiusNine taking shape it was time to move the business into a new light under the name of Dylan Walsh, Custom Furniture and Design. I always wanted to have my name in the business; there is no prouder moment when your name is out there on a product that you are passionate about.
With the creation of Dylan Walsh, Custom Furniture & Design, we are hoping to set a new standard for not only our day to day furniture requests but set the benchmark for ergonomic electric sit-stand desks and office fit-outs and bridge the gap between being ergonomically sound and looking good.

In the media

In anyone’s language this is a bar to envy. With its warm jarrah paneling, integrated LED lighting, wine fridge, dishwasher – and most importantly a beer tap – the judges fell for it too. So much so the masterpiece from a small Heatherbrae workshop won the President’s Choice at this year’s Cabinet Makers and Designers Association Awards.
